Washington reports war bond sales totaling 6.16 billion dollars, 44 percent of the 14 billion national target. Individual sales hit 1.941 billion, over 35 percent of the 5.5 billion individual quota, with Marine Day events planned nationwide and Seattle banks staging tribute drives.
Washington reports Republican leaders condemn Willkie’s call for about 26 billion dollars in wartime taxes as unrealistically high and potentially harmful to the middle class and business solvency. Willkie argues taxes must rise now and be far beyond the administration's proposal to curb mounting national debt.
