Two Syracuse youths First Navy inductees under new program
Alfis Reed aged 18 of 237 East Adams Street and Leo Fortino aged 19 of 413 North State Street became the first two Syracuse youths accepted by the Navy under the new Selective Service induction system at the Armory. Both had prior rejections for technical reasons, including missing parent signatures and unknown parental whereabouts. They were among 20 inductees that day, with most waiving seven day furlough to depart immediately at recruiters' request.

Duke to Join War Dog Unit Born on Pearl Harbor Day
Duke, a German shepherd of 72 pounds owned by Mrs. Thomas D. Waldorf of 1235 Teall Avenue, leaves tomorrow to join Dogs for Defense. Born on December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day, the intelligent dog is hailed as a volunteer and may prove the Army’s claim that one trained dog with a soldier can be worth six men.

Two Children Rescued From Grand Avenue Fire
A neighbor’s alarm led firefighters to a Grand Avenue home where two children were trapped by smoke and flames. Fireman Smyth crawled through dense smoke to reach them, delivering them to Onondaga General Hospital for treatment. both were later discharged. Mrs Edna Harden suffered serious burns and was treated at Crouse Irving Hospital. The cause remains undetermined.

Seventy Five Selectees Inducted by Syracuse Board 468
Seventy five men were accepted for military service yesterday at the New York State Armory as the Army physical examination team returned from Binghamton to resume inductions with Navy and Marine Corps. Navy officers selected eight for naval service and four for the Marine Corps. Lieut. C. W. Jeffress spoke on insurance and allotments before swearing in the inductees. A glee club program followed. Names listed include William L. Vail, James W. McCurdy, and many others from Syracuse area addresses.

Keller Takes Charge of Amboy Weather Bureau Station
Meteorologist Andrew P. Keller arrived in Syracuse and assumed full charge of the U S Weather Bureau Station at Amboy yesterday. He replaces William H. Tracy who left Nov 15 for Buffalo where he now directs the bureau. Keller served 20 years in Buffalo and previously worked at Sandusky and the Buffalo airport station. He is married with two children, Sally and Andrew.

Supervisors Study County Manager Idea
A eight member committee of the Onondaga County Board of Supervisors, named by Chairman Edward Yackel, will study proposals for a county manager and sound public opinion. The group includes three Syracuse supervisors and five from the towns, chaired by R. Walter Riehlman of Tully, with members Dolbear, Kren, Byrnes, Snyder, Down, Humphrey, and Campbell. The board referred League of Women Voters’ salary suggestion of up to 5000 dollars annually and a Young resolution for popular election to the committee, pledging no action until public desire is clear. The board also voted to scrap and salvage materials from two dismantled railroad bridges in Peru and to rent county highway equipment to city and towns.

Mrs. James W. Robinson of 113 Fourth North Street said at St. Mary's Maternity Hospital she will name her baby boy after his father James William Robinson who died from an electrical shock June 19 at Halcomb Steel Company plant. The son born yesterday is healthy and Mrs. Robinson's condition is favorable. He was 21 at death and worked as a crane operator. Beverly Jean Robinson is his sister.
