Hospitals seek outpatient surgery center in DeWitt

Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital seeks an 18,006 square foot outpatient surgery center across from Wegmans Plaza in DeWitt. The $5 million project would house five operating rooms and 20 recovery beds, operating for about 5,000 procedures annually, with $2.7 million yearly operating costs and an $800 address. Town officials express traffic concerns while St. Joseph's plans a larger site in Manlius near Fayetteville Mall proceed under state review. Construction hoped to start in August and finish in a year.

Fed cuts rates amid hopes to dodge recession

The Federal Reserve lowered the interbank rate from 5.14 percent to 5.4 percent to spur activity as inflation remains tame. In Charlotte, a private plane nearly collided with a USAir jet during landing after a Cessna 182 entered the path, coming within 60 yards and prompting tower warnings.

State legislators push to raise gambling age in New York

Three state legislators propose banning under-21 purchases of lottery tickets and horse betting in New York. Two other bills would bar vending machine sales of lottery tickets and require notices to officials when stores offer new Quick Draw games as a deterrent to underage gambling, said substate Sen Frank Padavan.
