Cochran Escapes Jail After Klan Rally Conviction
Former Oneidan Buddy Cochran, 30, escaped Sumter County Jail with inmate Michael Proctor while awaiting local charges. Cochran had been found guilty on eight counts of aggravated assault for ramming a car into a Ku Klux Klan rally in Plains Georgia, 1975, and sentenced to 12 years in prison with eight years probation. He has a wartime Marine background and prior legal troubles including a charge of statutory rape and other misconduct. The search extended around Americus, Georgia, as authorities pursued both escapees.

Radio copter crash in Quincy kills two and injures four
A traffic helicopter attempting an emergency landing crashed through a second floor roof in a three story apartment building in Quincy. Two bodies burned beyond recognition were found near the wreckage. On board were WEEI reporter Henry Whitmore, 29, and pilot Richard Banks, 50. Shipyard worker William Amaral, 30, resident of the building, described hearing a loud bang as residents fled the fire. Fire Chief Barry said the charred remains were found on a second floor inside the tubular helicopter structure.
