Jerusalem Orthodox Patriarch Diodoros dies at 77 in Holy Land
Diodoros I, longtime leader of the Jerusalem Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, died Tuesday night at 77 after a prolonged illness. Bishops prepared for an interim successor with candidates Metropolitan Timothy and Metropolitan Hirinaios. A synod is expected early next year to choose a new patriarch, amid Diodoros life marked by defense of traditional prerogatives and cautious ecumenical views. He led the church since 1981, oversaw sites in Bethlehem and Jerusalem, and hosted John Paul II during a 1999 visit to discuss healing divisions between Orthodox and Latin churches.
