The U S Chamber of Commerce plans a referendum to unite its 2 000 member organizations behind a push in Congress to remove portal to portal pay claims dating to 1938. Workers seek pay for time before and after shifts and nonproduction duties prompting amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act. The act sets a 44 hour week then 42 and 40 hour weeks in successive years.
The United Automobile Workers Union filed in Federal Court in Detroit seeking retroactive portal-to-portal pay totaling 20 million dollars for employees of General Motors Corporation and Briggs Manufacturing Company.

The Supreme Court granted John Lewis and the United Mine Workers a hearing on a new appeal challenging a preliminary injunction issued during the soft coal strike. The action broadens issues in Lewis's appeal of a 10000 dollar fine for him and a 3500000 dollar fine on the union for contempt of court. The court consolidated this with earlier appeals and will hear arguments on January 14.

Athens reports the Greek freighter Syra struck a magnetic mine outside Volos Harbor Sunday and was a total loss. Greek authorities confirmed the ship was destroyed with all hands and cargo, marking a critical mine threat in Aegean waters.
The American Transit Association confirms Kilroy identity and ships a street car to James J. Kilroy of Halifax Mass. The car will be attached to Kilroys home to provide housing for six of nine Kilroy children, ages from six months to 15 years, in a housing contest prize gesture.
The US Navy ship LC-3 1090 left Dairen after a 20 minute verbal ultimatum from Soviet military officials. American officials sought to land Jesse Poole and other staff at the US Consulate, but were denied by Maj. Gen. V U Khorzhanoff. A diplomatic appeal followed as the ship departed after 48 hours in port.
