Return to basics as Christmas trends favor handmade gifts
Readers embrace a 1973 holiday shift toward simple, heartfelt presents. Craft shops surge with recycled, embroidered, painted and homemade items from milk-carton candles to peculiarly crafted toys, candles, dolls and needlework, signaling a wind-down from prior shopping frenzies toward meaningful traditions.
Decorate artificial plants with lighted dust-free shine
Readers share home hints. A DIY tip suggests spraying artificial plants with liquid cleaner then drying before decorating with mini Christmas lights. A commenter notes using an ash tray with sand to extinguish cigarettes on a camping trip. Other hints include using crayons to touch up damaged items and buying discounted pieces with nicks.
