Breakers Sold to Newport Preservation Society for 365000
The Breakers, Newport's famed 77-year-old mansion built for Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895, has been sold to the Newport Preservation Society for 365000. The society now owns eight mansions for exhibition, and will launch a 1973 fund drive to cover the purchase costs. The price followed 18 months of negotiations with the heirs of Countess Laszlo Szechenyi, formerly Gladys Vanderbilt, who had rented the house for a dollar a year since 1948. Over 15 million visitors have toured The Breakers since then.
