Reports detail a large Japanese landing in Lingayen Gulf Luzon as U S and Filipino forces engage in heavy fighting including tank clashes. Communiqués say transports and destroyers faced heavy gunfire and that Americans and Filipinos are holding firm against the assault near Manila.
Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia signed an air raid bill imposing a 300 dollar fine or six months in jail or both for violating safety orders during an imminent air raid alarm. The law requires prompt compliance with authorized orders, evacuation from streets, and cover, with penalties for disobedience and for broadcasting misleading alarms.
Viondat and Dave Baerekete announced appointments of postmasters for Painted Post East Setauket and Florence Danowski with Claude L. Wright named at East Setauket N Y and other assignments in the state.
The Supreme Court granted the Schenectady Union Publishing Company petition for review of a lower court order forcing trial in a $250,000 libel suit by Representative Martin L. Sweeney. Sweeney alleges a column titled Washington Merry-Go-Round claimed he opposed appointing a foreign-born Jew to a federal judgeship. The case could set a New York libel precedent.
Theodore J. Baxter of Colonie faced grand jury action on a second degree murder charge after the shotgun death of Alphonse Russell of Albany during an argument over car keys. Police said the quarrel began when Russell drove to Baxter’s home to obtain the keys.
Tokyo reports large Japanese force landed at a new point on Luzon Island with attacks from north and south. Guam indicates peace restored on Saipan. Japan claims mopping up in China while accusing British forces of sinking a Soviet liner and forcing refuge at Kowloon.
Japanese news agency Domei said in a broadcast heard in London that since the Pacific war began the Japanese claim 47 enemy warships damaged or sunk, 38 merchant vessels captured, 38 smaller craft, and 114 planes shot down. It listed naval losses: one light cruiser damaged, one destroyer sunk, one minesweeper sunk and another severely damaged, five submarines missing and 72 planes lost.
Secretary Hull met for an hour with Rear Admiral Horne who returned from Martinique amid reports a naval accord with France had been reached to neutralize the colony near the Panama Canal. Officials declined to detail the talks, with a possible State Department announcement later.
Ray mond Zawisza, an 18 year old Erie sheet metal worker from Pennsylvania, hitchhiked about 100 miles overnight to reach the Navy Recruiting Station. He walked much of the way and was fed and given a bed for the night before his physical examination scheduled for this morning.
