A massive earthquake and tidal wave struck Japan today killing at least 1,500 and leaving 20,000 homeless. Official tallies listed 546 dead. thousands were injured or missing as 14,686 houses and 21 factories were demolished or damaged. Relief efforts mobilized from Hiroshima to Osaka and beyond amid cold weather and widespread destruction.
Eugene Talmadge, governor-elect of Georgia, died at 7 A.M. after a coma brought on by illness since October 4. He was to be inaugurated for a fourth term. Funeral services were tentatively set for Monday in McRae. The death creates a political fight over succession with Ellis Arnall possibly replacing him or the Legislature naming an interim governor.
Widespread precipitation with snow and sleet in the Syracuse area follows a rain ending tonight. Overnight lows near 26 with high near 31. Sunday shows ongoing snow with clearing in the south.
An unidentified group set off a powerful bomb today in Buenos Aires breaking many windows near a display painting referencing Oct 17 1945 and Juan Peron. No casualties were reported as Gen Peron remains president.

Polish priest Father Leo Nichwlowski testified at the war crimes tribunal describing freezing and malaria experiments at Dachau. He refuted Nazi doctors claims that only death condemned prisoners were subjected to tests.
U S Ambassador George S Messer Smith departed Buenos Aires for Washington to report to Secretary of State James Byrnes on the first six months of his mission in Argentina. He met President Juan Peron and Mrs Peron and two cabinet ministers at the airport before departure.

A Vermont woodsman held for questioning in the choking attack and alleged disappearance of Paula Weldon a 21 year old Bennington College sophomore. The suspect was arrested after a 21 year old daughter of a fruit store owner Theona Felulos was cornered and choked in a dark alley. The assailant was drunk and demanded money and threatened to kill. The victim yelled alerting police who detained the suspect shortly after.
Shanghai traders report the black market value of the Chinese dollar sliding 500 points to a record 7000 per U.S. dollar. The drop underscores continuing pressure on the yuan as demand remains weak amid market volatility.

A 27 year old factory worker was held for five hours in the abduction of Della Stackhouse a 40 year old mother of three. She was released unharmed at a farmhouse five miles from her Dixon home. Sheriff Gilbert Finch said Frank Sickles of Wyoming Illinois 60 miles away claimed he forced Mrs Stackhouse to leave with him after an attempted robbery. He tied two Stackhouse children Lynda and Dianne to a clothes line and led the woman through the countryside. The children were freed when an older brother returned home and alerted police.
The Senate War Investigating Committee seeks contempt charges against Edward P. Terry former secretary to Senator Bilbo for defying questions about a $15 000 donation from Simon Liberman of New York State to back Bilbo’s opponent in the Mississippi race. Committee counsel may proceed with a grand jury after approval from the president pro tempore and then the U S district attorney. A perjury charge is also pursued as Terry testified he received the funds to back any viable challenger but could not find one.
Secretary Byrnes will host Italian Premier De Gasperi in Washington. De Gasperi accepts invitation after Big Four meeting decision to raise Italian reparations from 325 million to 360 million dollars. He will depart Rome January 3 and arrive January 9.
The commission approved in principle a Baruch plan to eliminate the big power veto on punishment for atomic violations, a victory for Bernard M. Baruch but with continuing battles over the veto and other points. A Canadian delegate noted ongoing contention and the article hints at further details on page 3.
