Hilfiger to launch record label with Quincy Jones backing
Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger plans a new record label with potential backing and distribution from Quincy Jones. Hilfiger, Syracuse alum and Elmira native, has long dressed musicians from the Rolling Stones to hip hop acts. His brother Andy will run day to day operations. Meanwhile the Presidents of the United States of America announce disbanding. Chris Ballew leaves to focus on family and other projects, including a TV pilot and his solo work. Columbia Records will issue a final 1998 Presidents album of unreleased tracks. Also of note, Luke Perry stars in The Florentine, a Pennsylvania mall town-set ensemble film. A TV service, Your Choice TV, offers pay-per-view reruns, expanding from 10,000 to an anticipated 2.1 million subscribers in the next year. Seinfeld and other prime-time programs face access restrictions on the service.
