Police opened fire outside the mass treason trial building in Johannesburg injuring 16 people including 4 whites and 3 nonwhites. Demonstrators gathered as authorities tried to move a crowd blocking the street and police reinforced the area with tear gas bombs reported on the second day of the trial of 163 defendants.
President Eisenhower hosts talks with Nehru at Washington National Airport during a state visit. The leaders discuss global affairs and a joint approach to key axes of world diplomacy, signaling strengthened ties between the United States and India.
The White House said Eisenhower and Nehru gained greater understanding of each other’s policies.
