State aims to raise cigarette taxes to fund health coverage
Governor Pataki announced a plan with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Leader Joseph Bruno to raise New Yorks cigarette tax from 56 cents to 1.11 per pack. The move would generate about 400 million annually to expand health insurance for up to one million uninsured residents and could deter 270000 adults and 30000 teens from smoking. The tax would become the nations highest, surpassing Hawaii and Alaska.

Hunt House saved for women's rights park history
