Secret memorandum pieced from White House data shows Vice President George Bush supported selling U S weapons to Iran to aid hostages. The memo, released by Iran-Contra committees, marks the first evidence of his position on the deal.
More than 1,200 arrested as riot police clash with protesters accusing government of cheating in the presidential vote. In Kwangju about 5,000 joined effforts against police. a neighborhood leader reportedly doused himself with kerosene in protest, claiming election bribery.
Legislative bargainers reached a $23 billion two year tax increase and progress on a $600 billion spending bill. The revenue package would raise $9 billion in fiscal 1988 and $14 billion next year while the spending bill would fund federal agencies through September 1983 and trim the deficit by $7.6 billion. Major disagreements remained on aid to the Nicaraguan Contra rebels, Medicare cuts, and broadcasting fairness doctrine. Leaders aimed to finish bargaining and send the measures to President Reagan for signature over the weekend.
Highlights show a 9 billion dollar tax increase and a 7.6 billion dollar spending reduction over two years to slow the federal deficit. The package includes 30.2 billion dollars in the current year with a temporary funding measure to avert a weekend government shutdown, agreed in a closed session by Rep. Dan Rosienkowski and Sen. Lloyd Bentsen.

New York City watch sees two men mug Salvation Army volunteer John McEnery known as Pop. They knocked him down on Broadway near 45th Street and stole his red kettle containing 65 cents. Police hunt suspects. McEnery vows to return to the street despite the shock.
