Senate backs 1965 Voting Rights Act extension for 1982
Sixty one senators back a House version to extend the Voting Rights Act, enough to block a filibuster. Kennedy and Mathias, with 59 co sponsors, seek prompt action next year. Thurmond, a chief opponent, says he may seek changes but won’t vow a filibuster. The measure faces January hearings as Baker’s earlier plan to renew protections without new provisions falters. The law currently covers 22 states, requiring Justice Department approval for changes in voting laws.
