Fire rekindled by mattress ignites 22 story East Side house

A smoldering mattress left on a second floor porch rekindled and heavily damaged a 22 story wood frame house at 413 S Beech St. Early this morning two men on the second floor were rescued by Rescue Squad teams and no major injuries were reported. Firefighters from Engine Companies 7 and 10 fought the blaze for about two hours as water and smoke damaged the first floor and attic. The house owned by Gdell Hudson suffered heavy damage to the second floor, attic and roof after residents believed the fire out.

North Side protests Salina-Jefferson school closure

About 60 residents gathered to oppose a tentative plan to close Salina-Jefferson Elementary, the district’s oldest and smallest school. They urged renovation of Salina-Jefferson and nearby Webster and Le Moyne schools, warning closures would threaten revitalization and trigger broader neighborhood decline. Local officials and community leaders voiced support for keeping the school open and preserving the area.

Crouse Hinds unit to stay in Liverpool area

Crouse-Hinds Traffic Control Products Department will remain in the Liverpool area as it is sold to Information Systems Technology Inc for about 6 million dollars. The deal does not affect the Electrical Construction Materials Department, which employs more than 2,000 in the Syracuse area. The sale aims to close by year end and maintains traffic signals production in Liverpool.

Syracuse Symphony Orchestra raises ticket prices after contract

Syracuse Symphony Orchestra musicians ratified a four year contract raising base pay from 12,684 to 22,440 by 1986, a 77 percent rise. Including total earnings, the package would hit 42 percent raising costs by 670000. More concerts, fund raising and tickets priced 7 to 14. Administrative staff to rebound to 15.

Trailways Syracuse Terminal Faces Busy Times and Strikes

The Trailways Syracuse terminal, dubbed the busiest in the United States per square foot, endures phone outages and chaos during Greyhound driver strikes.
