A morning fire on the fourth floor of the Central City Business Institute at 953 James St. prompted class cancellations after smoke and heat damaged a storage room filled with cardboard and paper. Fire crews halted the blaze with no injuries. investigators probe possible cigarette carelessness.
President Ford discussed a proposed 40 percent average pay increase for congressional judicial and top executive salaries with Republican leaders. The plan, backed by the salary commission headed by Peter Peterson, would include strong conflict of interest rules and outside income prohibitions.
