Tokyo reports three U S battleships sunk in Hawaii raid, confirming Arizona loss alongside Oklahoma and West Virginia. Japanese dispatches say four battleships and multiple vessels damaged or sunk, with Tojo urging resolve for a long war and heightening Hong Kong assault plans.
United States Navy declined to comment on Japanese claims that the battleship Arizona was sunk in the Hawaii battle. Reports said Rear Admiral Isaac Campbell Kidd was killed in action while commanding a Pacific fleet battleship division, with possibility he was in command of the Arizona at the time.
A jury of eight women and four men heard the graft conspiracy case against former Mayor Richard W. Reading and 40 co defendants, including 26 suspended police, connected to a 10 million dollar policy racket in Detroit and Wayne County. The indictment accuses them of conspiring to obstruct justice through graft deals for protection.

Balboa Panama Canal Zone sirens sounded at 2 43 PM in a precautionary blackout. Three planes appeared and were identified without incident and the all clear followed 26 minutes later. Army officials reported no damage or casualties.
New England coast receives an aircraft alert early today with an all clear sounded before dawn. The precautionary measure put Army posts and naval bases into darkness. In Portland Maine two motorists were seriously injured in the blackout, one a soldier and one a shipyard worker. Police said two cars collided head on near Fort Williams on a darkened road.
