GE's Navy contract to create 400 engineering jobs

The U.S. Navy awarded General Electric a 13.6 million dollar contract as part of a 1.5 billion package to develop weapon system controls for a new class of nuclear submarines. The deal will add 400 engineering positions at GE's undersea systems unit in Syracuse, the largest contract for the department. Connie Grasso said the firm will double recruiting to fill roles quickly.

Senate approves 606 billion budget for 1988 programs

The Senate voted 72 to 21 for a 606 billion spending bill funding federal agencies for the 1988 fiscal year. It includes 9 million for Contra aid, permits Stinger missile sales to Bahrain, and delays Clean Air Act enforcement for about 60 communities. The package aims to reduce deficits with 7.6 billion in savings and ties to a larger 352 billion package of tax and benefit cuts.

OPEC Nears Renewal Of Oil Pricing Pact

In Vienna an OPEC minister said the cartel leans toward renewing the existing price of 18 dollars a barrel for six months starting January 1 and that Iraq would stay outside the deal. The conference was expected to end with most members agreeing to renew the current accord amid caution over 1988 pricing.

Gorbachev Offers to End Aid to Nicaragua Courtship

House Speaker Jim Wright says Gorbachev proposed cutting military aid to Nicaragua in a summit talk with Reagan. Wright relayed that Gorbachev would halt arms shipments and withdraw forces to support the peace process, a gesture seen as goodwill toward ending U S involvement in Central America.

Navy rescues 40 from burning Cypriot tanker Pivot near Hormuz

A U S Navy destroyer and a press helicopter saved 40 crewmembers from the Pivot after an Iranian gunboat attack in the Persian Gulf. The tanker, carrying Saudi Arab oil, burned as flames spread, with Greek officers and many Filipino seamen among the survivors. A pregnant woman was among those plucked to safety.
