Mexican businessmen hoped for a quick peso recovery after it slid to 5.63 per dollar and banks halted regular peso trading. The Bank of Mexico bought about $500,000 in pesos at 5.50 to ease the drop but left the market after half an hour as the peso fluctuates since the 1938 oil property seizures.
Walter J. Bell former police chief testified he saw Mayor Charles W. Kress signal Dora Warren at a hospital and hinted she could reopen her disorderly house. The witness described a 1938 padlock scene at 18 Wall Street and recounted Warren’s claims about protection money and campaign contributions to Kress.
Grant Stack pleads guilty to murder in the second degree in a Syracuse court. He had been arraigned on a second degree indictment, admitted guilt, and was remanded to Cedar Street jail. Prosecutor Unckless questioned Stack about his background as officials detailed the case and his confession.

Charles R. Walgreen age 66 founder of a drug store empire died after months of ill health. He bought his first store in Chicago in 1902, paid debt in four years, built nearly 500 stores in 39 states with 50 million yearly business. Funeral plans in Dixon Illinois. Survived by widow and daughter Mrs John W Stephan. son Charles R Walgreen Jr. heads company. Walgreen born 1873 near Galesburg Illinois, Swedish immigrant family.
In Louisville on December 12 thieves entered a trucking company's warehouse and stole 20 cases of whisky and two cases of nerve tonic, leaving the scene undetected overnight.
The State Supreme Court jury found Donald A. J. Ray of Salamanca guilty of first degree murder in the Sept. 16 killing of Paul A. M. Balsiger, a 40 year old Bradford oil company clerk. Ray awaits sentence by Justice Alonzo G. Hinkley, with a recommendation for life imprisonment.
Rear Admiral Harry Yarnell, retired head of the U S Asiatic Fleet, told the Massachusetts branch of the American Bureau of Medical Aid to China that Japan’s invasion has produced greater death and misery in two years than the Great War. He said China was making progress toward a stable democratic government before the conflict and would likely have become a model for peace in the Far East with more peacetime years.
