Puzzled authorities review three ragged children from Portugal
Three American children aged 11 to 14 were sent to a hospital after authorities at Kennedy International Airport found them undernourished and dirty on arriving from Portugal en route to Virginia with their father Joseph Pires. Foster-adoptive contacts in Virginia say the father had previously lost custody. The children were Ana Maria Teller Pires, 14. Joseph Grumman Fires, 11. and Jacqueline Onassis 6,5. Pires drove home to Manassas, Va., vowing to regain custody and hired a New York lawyer.

High winds along Lake Erie strain plans to lift a wrecked barge from a Niagara River bridge abutment. The Army Corps of Engineers, funding the salvage begun 18 days ago, cited unfavourable conditions as the reason for possible postponement of the Thanksgiving setback removal. The 75 percent submerged wreck has pinning against the abutment since August 7 when a tugboat lost control and sank.
