American forces launch a mercy mission in Somalia with helicopters and hovercraft delivering Marines. Troops encounter no resistance as they move to quell clashes that threaten relief efforts and cause famine risk in Mogadishu and surrounding areas.
U S Marines and Navy commandos landed in Mogadishu before dawn, meeting little resistance as they secured the capital and seaport to reopen the food pipeline. Somalis hailed the operation as Marines, with a growing force, to follow 16 000 Marines from Camp Pendleton and 10 000 infantry from Fort Drum.
The first Fort Orem unit heads to Bridgeport Connecticut under U N sponsorship to guard humanitarian aid deliveries in Somalia. The mission, backed by the United Nations, aims to protect relief convoys from armed extortionists, loyalist rebels, and freelancing groups as residents of Skaneateles gather prayers and funds for famine victims.
Gov. Mario Cuomo said New York will try to persuade Ford Motor Co to buy GM's In sane Fisher Guide plant in Salina. Talks focus on preserving jobs, with officials cautioning that waving the Fisher Guide plant is premature and that the MDA would assist if asked.
