A 27-year-old South Side resident received two to four years in state prison for a November 1982 robbery and beating of an East Fayette Street man. William Applins pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree robbery and grand larceny, with defense calling him an involved bystander. His brother Raymond Jones, already sentenced to seven to 14 years, had prior felony convictions including a 1979 robbery and 1982 shooting death linked drug theft.

Frank T. Abbott Jr. of Fulton died Thursday morning at Lee Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired traffic manager, member of Masons and Royal Arch Masons, and a church member. Survived by wife Lottie Atkins Abbott, son Frank II, daughters Arlene Maude and Barbara Dingle, 14 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two brothers, and other relatives. Bernard A. Mitchell, 71, Chicago businessman and founder of Jovan Inc, died Monday. He started Mitchell Manufacturing Co in 1936, invented a fluorescent desk lamp and a hermetically sealed window air conditioner, and launched Jovan in 1968 with a $100000 investment before selling it in 1979 for 85 million.

Phoui Sananikone, former Laos premier and foreign minister and a leading 1950s 60s political figure, died Monday in Paris at age 80. He served as royal government premier 1940 57 and 1958 59 and was Parliament speaker until 1974.
Sir Keith Holyoake, 79, who led New Zealand into the Vietnam War as prime minister, died Thursday. He served four terms as prime minister from 1960 to 1972 and held the post briefly in 1957 after being deputy prime minister.
