Egyptian bloc wins U.N. vote against Israel

The United Nations General Assembly approved a nonaligned measure urging states to avoid actions that could recognize the Israeli occupation of Arab land. The 96 to 7 vote with 31 abstentions signals wide regional backing but observers doubt it will advance a new path to peace. The United States abstained on the final vote after opposing a separate vote on aid references. The resolution echoes 1967 Security Council aims for Israeli withdrawal and recognition of Middle East sovereignty within secure borders.
