Medicare and Medicaid cuts proposed for 1984 budget
The Health and Human Services plan would cut Medicare and Medicaid benefits by 5.2 billion dollars next year, trim state Medicaid grants to 19.3 billion, and reduce Medicare spending by 2.6 billion. Hospitals and physician services for the elderly and disabled would face major reductions as the department reorganizes payment methods under a new flexible fee schedule. The administration argues the Health Care Financing Administration would become the largest purchaser of care, while Congress debates the plan amid expected opposition. The outlays would total 82.5 billion in fiscal 1984, with the reforms expected to reshape physician payments from the current customary and prevailing charges to a standardized or negotiated schedule.
