Sakharov Fasts as Daughter-in-Law Seeks U S Departure

Sakharov, 60, and his wife Yelena Bonner, 58, have fasted over two weeks in their Gorky exile to press for the emigration of his daughter-in-law, Liz Alexeyeva, 26, to join her husband in the United States. Izvestia says they were hospitalized to prevent complications. Alexeyeva fears force-feeding while Sakharov suffers a heart condition and has not taken medicine since the fast began. The dissident physicist, Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1975, was banished to Gorky two years ago to keep him away from Western reporters.
