William H. Frank was elected fire commissioner of the Lyncourt Fire District for a five year term. He succeeds Henry Fischer who did not seek reelection. Frank is a member of the Lyncourt Volunteer Fire Department and served as chief in 1954 and 1958.
State police set up a Route 11 roadblock near North Syracuse to inspect cars and trucks for safety issues. At 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. about 10 tickets were issued mainly to truck drivers for missing or nonworking flares and signals.
Representatives of the Syracuse Parking Authority and the Chamber of Commerce will appear before the City Planning Commission to seek abandonment of part of W Washington Street for the proposed 800000 dollar, 750 car E W Edwards parking garage. Lane said the plan could fail if the 12 foot strip is not included, possibly dropping the project.
Mayor Mead was admitted to Syracuse Memorial Hospital at 4 am on orders of Dr John J Hogan with chest pains. Executive secretary Richard F Torrey said cardiograms showed no abnormality and the mayor’s condition is “very good” though tests continue. He will rest and not receive visitors with plans to slow outside activities.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. James P. McPeak rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is reported progressing satisfactorily at St Josephs Hospital where he underwent surgery three weeks ago. In his absence the Rev. Frank J Harrison has been acting rector.
Four year old John Godleski fell from a stool at 208 Croton Street and struck a rocking chair, causing a laceration over his left eye. Patrolman Louis Mangino said he was treated and released at St Josephs Hospital.
Judge Truman H Preston presided over traffic court with cases including an unregistered vehicle fine of 100 dollars suspended, speeding at 35 to 40 mph with 25 dollar fine, leaving scene of accident with 30 days, and several other violations. Subjects include Joseph Lea, Palmer Melton, Sebastian Federa, Radon Hubbard, and addresses listed.

Syracuse residents show cautious buying as 1956 license tab sales begin December 1. County Motor Vehicle Bureau reports 1,510 tabs sold with about 100 opening day, reflecting a calm season. Albany processing reduces mail order. Sub stations set for January 20 to February 1 with final deadline January 30 and 31.
Officials hope to resolve a coal shortage at the county home by testing two carloads from C L Amos Coal Corp of Syracuse in Cleveland to see if they meet specifications. Purchasing Agent Robert Sollinger expects results by week’s end. If approved, the county plans to buy 2000 tons, weathering a 12 day stock as car shortages and mine breakdowns threaten delivery.
The Railroad Police Benevolent Association will sponsor a testimonial dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Liederkranz Club honoring Lee G. Wagar of New York City, who retires Dec 31 after 40 years of service as New York Central division chief of police. Howard Beagle, captain of the local Central police, will speak. Attending are Frank G. Love, George Grebert, D. W. Taylor, Peter T. Hogan, Robert W. Stone, and Charles Bennett. Hogan serves as toastmaster.
Police plan to question a parking garage operator near the War Memorial after a 15 year old was found moving cars into the street to clear space for “short timers.” Officers Sposato and Dwyer reported the youth lacked a driver's license and claimed he worked for Courthouse Garage at 515 State Street to relocate regular customers’ cars. A blue ticket was issued for a Youth Bureau appearance.
Cortland readers learn the Cortland Community Players will host a Christmas buffet supper at 7 p.m. Saturday in Hotel Cortland. Attendees may bring a 25 cent gift for exchange. Reservations due by tomorrow by calling Sylvia Goldstein Peg Bentley Theo May or Gladys Sheridan.
Albert T. Saumier 35 of Buffalo received four to eight years in Attica State Prison after pleading guilty to first degree grand larceny for stealing a $2,000 car from E M O Donnell Co. on Oct. 8. He was a second offender due to a 1950 forgery conviction. At County Court, Edward Mincheck 36 of Brooklyn, Michael J. Murphy 24, and Seman B. Ramsey 32 pleaded guilty to related charges. Ramsey admitted stealing a car from Forsythe Motors on Nov. 19 and faces Dec. 20 sentencing. Murphy will be sentenced Dec. 15 for forging a $500 check on June 25.
Applications for a county civil service examination for city firemen are falling behind with the filing deadline this afternoon. Up to noon today 16 applicants had filed. Fire Chief Francis R. Ferren expected about 25 men to be appointed from the eligibility list. E. Pomeroy, executive director, said candidates will be informed of test location and date five days before the examination.
Women of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engine Men will gather at 8 p.m. Friday at Mrs. Anna Cole’s home 158 Mosley Drive. The program features refreshments and a Christmas gift exchange.
Two Syracuse judges and an attorney will join a discussion on rule changes and efforts to speed court calendars at the Fourth Departmental Committee of the State Judicial Conference in Rochester. Supreme Court Justice William E. McClusky will present civil practice changes prepared by his committee, to be forwarded to the Legislature next year. Also attending are Judge Francis D. McCain and Attorney George F. Sullivan. State Administrator John B. Johnson will attend, the first such session for him since last summer.
Members and guests of the Esucarys Community Club met at the Arion Club for their annual Christmas party and dinner. John Casey acted as Santa delivering gifts to members, the club presented a gift to president Robert G. Selleck, a business session preceded a grand march and dancing, with community singing led by Charles Ecker and others. Movies by Harlow Galster will be shown at the January 17 meeting.
Herman Root of Mattydale was re-elected to a five year term as fire commissioner of Salina Consolidated Fire District No 2. He defeated Andrew Riley 91 to 35 in the annual election at the Mattydale Fire House with district residents eligible to vote.
A short circuit in a switchbox caused a slight fire at HyGrade Food Products at 247 Walton St. Firefighters were summoned at 7:40 a.m. and reported only minor damage to the plant.
