Crash pilot lost in fog before Northwest collision
At Detroit Metropolitan Airport a DC-9 failed to clear a Boeing 727 in fog, killing eight. The DC-9 pilot William Lovelace said they were unsure of their position as air traffic control urged them to exit 21-Center. The collision injuring 24, with both pilots surviving, while investigators noted the crew faced visibility problems and tricky taxiing.
