South Africa to withdraw from Angola after aid to UNITA

South African troops will pull back from Angola after intervening for UNITA in the 12 year civil war. Gen. Geldenhuys cited completing tasks in South Africa's interest and protecting soldiers as reasons for the withdrawal. Angola warned of attack if forces remained, with Cuban reinforcements reported by AIM.

Spyro Gyra Concert Canceled at Landmark Theater

First round of peace talks for Nicaragua ends in failure

In Santo Domingo the first peace talks between Nicaragua’s government and rebels reached an impasse after two days. Mediator Cardinal Obando y Bravo said the parties did not meet face to face, delivering proposals between sides and delaying a Christmas truce. He urged direct talks as daily fighting continued.
