WSTM TV Channel 3 says it will not renew sports anchor Roger Springfield’s contract, ending his 37 year on air run. Acting manager James Kizer cites the decision as best for all involved and says Springfield planned to clear his office by day’s end.
Camp Verde Arizona residents fear a pastor of a cultlike church will massacre followers on Christmas Day to trigger a premature rapture. FBI involvement is sought as townspeople report rumors and a former member led protests demanding protection from The Spoken Word Tabernacle leader Rev Jim Jones who is linked by name to the Jonestown tragedy.

General Motors will shut Inland Fisher Guide plant in Salina in September, laying off about 1,400 workers as part of seven-plant closures to cut costs. The plant makes plastic trim parts for GM cars and minivans, and the move follows GM announcements from last December. The closure would be one of the largest local job losses in years and affects Salina’s status as a major employer.
New spring grocery labels add information beyond prior labels. Federal officials call the changes user friendly while industry reps call them cluttered. A central feature is a column titled percent of Daily Value showing how much of a day’s target for nutrients is provided, likened to the familiar daily allowance.
Albany video cameras and digital imaging will give licenses and identifications a new look. Under the system announced Wednesday, a digital imaging computer records a person’s image and signature for easier storage and removal. Numbers shrink from 19 to nine, renewal costs rise 75 cents to 22.25. Licenses will be color coded to help police and alcohol merchants identify document type. Under 21 indicators appear on the license. A renewed or duplicate license can be created without visiting a DMV office.
