Canton Girl Dies In Apartment Fire

A 4 year old Canton girl Anne Marie Barber died in a Tuesday morning fire at 49 West Plain Street Apartments. Authorities say a cigarette lighter may have started the blaze which gutted the second floor two bedroom unit. The mother Victoria Barber 21 and younger brother escaped with minor injuries while a man sleeping on a couch suffered burns to his legs. The brick building remained structurally sound but adjacent apartments suffered smoke and water damage. This was the second fatal fire in St. Lawrence County that week.
