Two injured when state police cruiser hits car at Route 57

Two people were injured Tuesday night when a car was struck by a state police cruiser at Route 57 and Wetzel Road in Liverpool. The trooper’s car reportedly traveled 15 to 20 mph over the limit with no siren or lights. Sharlene Mason-DeGonzalez, 45, of Liverpool, sustained a concussion and internal injuries and remained in serious condition at University Hospital. Hector Gonzalez also had a concussion and was to be released after treatment at St. Joseph’s Health Center. Trooper Edwin Streety sustained a leg injury with non-severe injuries and was treated at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. Witnesses described the approach and collision after 10 p.m.

Itinerant carnival priest presides over fair baptisms and funerals

Walter Gould Jr and Marilyn Gould cradled their six month old daughter La Martha as Monsignor Robert McCarthy known as Father Mac officiated a baptism at the State Fair. For 33 years he has traveled fairs to hold services and weddings for carnival workers. He returned to the fair after retirement when no other priest was available.

Prisoners linked to Cuban boat people probe

The Clinton administration plans to ask Cuban authorities about whether released prisoners join Cuban boat people fleeing the island. US officials say delegation talks in New York will address about 100 suspect cases among 15,000 detainees at Guantanamo. Prisoners are often tattooed to identify them, prompting concern over past Martel boatlift ties.

Judge approves sale of swindler lottery windfall

Federal bankruptcy judge in Hartford Connecticut on Tuesday approved selling the 20 year annuity backing Joseph Sutera’s Massachusetts lottery jackpot won in October 1990. Sutera, 58, of Waterford, is jailed serving a five year term for a real estate scam that defrauded hundreds. Three installments were kept by the bankruptcy trustee. sixteen remain to be distributed to victims.
