Time runs out on steel contract talks as mill shutdown looming and a midnight strike deadline nears. William E. Simkin says talks show a narrow gap but broad differences remain. AFL-CIO accuses industry of bad faith while government pressure for a peaceful settlement grows.
Sheriff O'Dell Anders said there are many suspects in the Ku Klux Klan stronghold case involving the assassination attempt on George Metcalfe, leader of Natchez NAACP. Metcalfe, badly injured when his car exploded, was treated for multiple injuries. An angry crowd gathered but no violence followed as police investigated and a $2,008 reward was posted.
In heavy fighting in the Mekong Delta about 100 miles southwest of Saigon Vietnamese ground forces conducted a multi battalion operation. Casualties reported moderate for government troops and 50 Viet Cong killed by body count with airstrikes possibly increasing the toll. A US Army helicopter was downed with two crew wounded and evacuated, two others rescued unharmed. Fighting ended around 4 am today.

An A. Greyhound bus collided with a trailer truck near Vinton Louisiana late Friday night, killing 11 people and injuring 28. The front of the truck and bus were crushed, with heavy timbers piercing the cab and bus. Bus driver Jeff BlankenShip of Houston was critically injured and later treated in Beaumont. The wreck occurred on U.S. 90 between Lake Charles and the Louisiana Texas base area, with victims from Texas Louisiana and others from Virginia and Alabama.
Clarence J. Foertch 73 of 1312 Park St. and longtime chairman of the Herald Journal Old Newsboys Christmas Toy Fund died last night in Veterans Administration Hospital after a long illness. A Syracuse University law graduate, he helped found the fund in 1933 and led it through 1961. He worked tirelessly on the annual toy sale, aiding hundreds of children yearly.
The U S Air Force rejected reports that about 100 Viet Cong troops rode American planes from Tam Ky to Da Nang months ago. Officials said transport is strictly managed and no such crowds or troop movements were found in manifests or crew records.
