Fire consumes historic block in Galveston downtown
In Galveston Texas UPI firefighters battled a blaze that destroyed most of a one block area of historic three story warehouse style buildings near The Strand. About 100 firefighters from several cities fought the fire for nearly four hours before it was brought under control around 5 a.m. CDT. One firefighter received smoke inhalation treatment, with no other injuries reported. The district had flood damage from Hurricane Alicia eight days earlier and remained largely without power while the Strand area saw limited reopenings.
