British defense reports detailed heavy Luftwaffe action along the southeast coast with attacks on Dover and Folkestone. The raids produced civilian casualties, destroyed homes, and sparked counterstrikes by RAF fighters, as air battles raged over the Channel and London area.
London reports a heavy weekend air raid by German planes, with about 34 to 180 aircraft involved and raids across the Midlands and southeast England. Casualties include several killed or injured, major fires in London districts, and damage to housing and industrial sites. Governments note continued attacks on military targets and a cautious rebuff of civilian bombardments.
The ministry reports last night’s raids caused several deaths and property damage across municipal, industrial, and residential areas in Mutlanda. Fires were controlled by morning due to ARP and APS crews, with few serious casualties in the rest of DAINTY.
Vatican sources report Portugal seeks Axis backing after a German Italian victory. Msgr Genaro Verslina was sent as secret emissary to explore Portugal position with the Holy See. Portugal would supply war materials and possibly submarine bases in exchange for Britain relinquishing colonies and a German pledge to restore them after victory.
New York traffic data show 219 fatalities in July, the second lowest on record, with 3567 accidents nationwide. Urban deaths outside New York City fell sharply, while metropolitan New York saw a large rise. The State Motor Vehicle Bureau notes rising fatalities among women drivers. Seven months of 1840 exceed the prior year by a wide margin.
Harlan Ky August 26 1 20 employees of the Harlan Walls corporation struck today citing labor dispute details 17 company employees faced charges. George Fitler district secretary treasurer of the United Mine Workers Union urged the workers to return to work and warned the shutdown could worsen mine conditions. The union cited 23 complaints against the company since April and accused it of failing to set a hearing on the complaints. Arrest warrants remained outstanding for 74 miners amid a tense labor dispute.
Berlin endured a major air raid with British bombers over the capital, incendiaries burning gardens, and heavy anti aircraft fire. Reports said several targets including rail facilities near the Rhine were struck and claims of German losses contrasted with British aircraft losses.
Allied reports describe a submarine sinking 885 tons on one voyage while another U boat took four merchant ships of about 30 000 tons from a convoy. German planes raided Weemwell northwest of Pool? land and sank a 4 000 ton merchant ship west of Land's End. Night raids hit Birmingham Kingston and Coventry armaments and industry. Berlin was bombed non military targets with incendiaries. Forty enemy planes attacked Berlin, one shot down. Allied losses include four of our planes missing. 72 enemy planes were engaged, 51 in air battles and 21 by anti aircraft fire. Richolen pursuit squadron downed over 260 Germans. First Lieutenant Wieck earned his 8th and 9th victories.
Shiree States Ammiassidor Jos ephus Daniels said he would not make a full report to Washington on the halting of the American tanker Hanna yesterday by a Mexican gunboat. The 10,000-ton vessel from San Francisco, owned by Standard Oil of California, was stopped about 70 miles north of Acapulco but allowed to proceed after identity was established. Mexican officials said no warning shot was fired. The State Department received a radio message claiming the halt and an inquiry was made in Mexico. Later the Herman Frasch, an American freighter, was shadowed by another Mexican gunboat near Acapulco amid fears of revolutionary movement activities.
New Zealand announced Britain would take all of its dairy output for the war effort including butter and cheese. Wellington disclosed the arrangement on August 26, detailing a plan to send about 120000 tons of butter and a similar quantity of cheese to support Britain.
