Chicago shines at NY State Fair with aging band energy

Dwayne Bailey sat on a stool due to an ankle injury as Chicago delivered a tight three hour set at the New York State Fair Grandstand. The eight member ensemble treated 4000 fans to hits like Dialogue, Stay the Night, Saturday in the Park, If You Leave Me Now, Hard Habit to Break, 25 or 6 to 4 and Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is. Bassist Jason Scheff led vocals with strong harmonies while the horn section energized nearly every track. Some favorites were skipped but the show proved Chicago’s enduring appeal and musical craft.

Second-oldest rock tour T-shirt peddler tours with Beach Boys

Steve Lewis, the so called second oldest rock T-shirt peddler in America, spends about 50,000 miles yearly on the road as the lone unofficial Beach Boys roadie. He travels in a 24-foot Ryder truck selling Beach Boys T-shirts and memorabilia from $3 to $30, meeting promoters and hawkers in towns during the 1990 State Fair run at the Grandstand. Lewis, aged nearly 39, began selling at a Grateful Dead show 12 years ago and now roams the country from town to town, planning to bring his 7-year-old son on the road some times, with a daily newspaper and AM news as his guides. He teases he loves America and one-night stands, and he eyes a future with a cellular phone and a truck life. A Phantom of the Fair promo card offers prizes at Syracuse Newspapers booth including theater tickets and zoo passes.
