New York FBI officials say Luke H. Dierken, held on 10000 dollars bail, acted as a data collector for Germany and linked with Felix Jahnke and Axel Wheeler Hill in an alleged espionage ring. The statement portrays him as representative of obscure individuals used to obtain and transmit information.

In Oakland a newlywed couple, Dorothy and Robert Newcomb, were shot to death by Dorothy’s former husband James McDonald, a 47 year old Army sergeant. McDonald then shot himself in the chest after disabling the couple’s car and forcing entry to their cottage. The bride had left him six days prior to their Mexico wedding and the trio had feared him.
In Moscow dispatch Henry C Cassidy reports General F N Mason MacFarlane head of the British mission says Red Army forces on the central front are full of fight and well trained. He witnessed a Russian counter attack near Smolensk and noted efficient air force cooperation and strong rear organization despite German shelling.
Detroit reports a local auction sold the horses used to pull carriages at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, leaving the 19th Century vehicle display without its familiar transport. Ford farms manager Ray Dahlinger noted the ponies for children are retained, while replacements for village hacks were not announced.

Sanford Bates, commissioner of the New York State Parole Board, was elected president of the American Parole Association at the convention closing session in San Francisco. The Aug 23 announcement notes Bates assumes leadership of the national group.
Theodore Mazur of Passaic one of seven soldiers who escaped Fort Dix was found shot dead near a Browns Mills summer cabin after fleeing police. John McHugh of Lansdowne Pa fired the fatal shot during the roundup. One fugitive, John E May of Union City, remained at large. Military police and state troopers conducted a wide-area search with several others captured in Wrightstown and nearby areas.
A major Philadelphia blaze today burned across a two block area from Cambria Street to Indiana Avenue destroying lumber and a millwork plant along with several other structures. Eighteen firemen were injured mildly as the five hour fire drew about 10 000 onlookers and threatened nearby facilities. The loss is estimated at more than $1 000 000 with past similar damage recorded last May 15 at W H Lear Lumber Co.
Madrid reports Germany and Spain signed an agreement today for an exchange of workers. The pact aims to facilitate labor mobility and place workers from both countries into suitable roles.
