A C119 flying boxcar crashed in the Liberty Park neighborhood near Charleston Air Force Base. Unconfirmed reports said 11 people died, including several civilians, as flames engulfed three homes. Firefighters battled the wreckage as investigators probed the scene.
President Eisenhower met six flood hard-hit state governors at Bradley Field and vowed to push federal disaster relief. He warned he may call a special session of Congress if needed to obtain funds, signaling a request for up to 75 million dollars for eight states with major disaster areas.

In Ashland Kentucky a bank teller at Second National Bank faced a would be robber. Gay Price reported the incident and the robber fled through a side door after the teller warned him off with a toy pistol. Police Sgt. Clarence James described the demand for twenty dollars and the teller’s refusal.
Ed mund Sagan of East Hampton New York died in a car collision with Dr. David Edwards near Water Mill. Police hunt after gun theft from Liverpool College cadet unit. seven Sten guns five .22 rifles and magazines taken amid doubts over political motives.
In Oklahoma City 16 year old Marilyn Boyett, resting in Crippled Children’s Hospital with an iron lung, is honored by Oklahoma residents who present a feathered Kiowa princess costume and a birthday cake. A TV station helped celebrate her honorary Kiowa princess title Pah-Mah Laughing Eyes.
William Bray of Utica, former lieutenant governor, was appointed by Governor Harriman to a ten year term on the State Building Code Commission. The post pays fourteen hundred dollars a year.
Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu heads a 20 man delegation from Tokyo and flies to Washington by air to discuss what he terms the broad outlines of American Japanese relations.
The Democratic group rejects Paul DeBernardis offer to let voters decide the Traffic Court judge in the Sept 13 primary. Legal action will be taken to invalidate the DeBernardis petition while DeBernardis plans to file in court after the 11 p.m. telegram deadline to County Chairman Charles Hogan.
A freight train struck a grammar school bus at a downtown crossing in Spring City Tennessee killing ten children and injuring thirty others. Bus driver Raymond Moore said his view was blocked by parked cars as he crossed.
A crippled Air Force jet skidded to a safe landing at Great Falls Air Force Base after ground crews sprayed slick fire extinguishing foam on the runway. Lt. Andrew B. Gass of Pittsburgh and Capt. Robert L. Page of Mason City escaped injury after a 40 minute effort to free a locked wheel.
A late cool front swept into Syracuse and Central New York dropping temperatures from 94 to 61, ending a heat wave. Weatherman Andrew J. Keller says the week stays cool and fair with highs around 79 to 82 and lows in the 50s, with a chance of about a half inch of rain Thursday.
