Three-fourths of haying in St. Lawrence County is complete, with 75 percent cut and stored. Excellent July weather aided early cutting, improving forage quality and afterpasture, while corn and weeds show mixed conditions. Potatoes suffer blight in some areas, and wheat planted last fall yields well for cattle and poultry.
Fay Corners school will stay open for 1948 49 after Albany confirmed the district taxpayers vote on June 21. The state upheld 44 voters in favor of keeping the school, reversing May 4 when 27 voted to close and bus students to Malone.
The Aluminum Workers Union 19266 AFL schedules nominations for president vice president and trustee at meetings on August 17 and 24 at 7 30 P M at the Labor Temple. Election is set for August 26 from 6 A M to 6 P M. David McDonald newly elected business agent had been president since April Norman Blais elected vice president resigned.
Robert W. Powell Jr. of 78 Main St Potsdam is among four Northern New York students awarded Cornell University scholarships. He will receive a $200 annual tuition reduction for four years. Powell, son of Mr and Mrs R W Powell, graduated Potsdam High School in June and has worked as a life guard in the village swimming program this summer.
John Capatula of Harrisville was struck by a limb while chopping wood near his home. He was taken to Edward John Noble Hospital with a slight concussion a possible fracture and a deep laceration.
George Wallace, 21, of 14 Beaver Street Malone, was discharged from Massena Memorial Hospital yesterday after suffering abrasions and contusions when his car went off the Massena Hogansburg highway at Racket River Saturday night. The car was badly damaged.
Fred Scott of Skaneateles Yacht and Country Club clinched the Rhodes Bantams title by winning the final Chaumont Bay race. He finished the two day series with 40 4 1/2 points, ahead of Bernard Hiller of Cleveland and Robert Hart of Chaumont who tied on 37 points but Hiller claimed second via race head-to-head. The Crescent Yacht Club hosted ceremonies where Scott received the cup.
Funeral services for Mrs. Winifred Nolan Small 78 widow of Joseph Small will be held tomorrow at 10 AM at Sacred Heart Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. She died Saturday at the home of her step son Allen Small of Brasher Flats after hip fracture and long illness. Surviving are four step sons Allen Albert of Massena William of Syracuse and Robert of Scotia a step daughter Mrs Frank Dougherty of Schenectady a brother John Nolan of Lowell and five nephews.
ITHACA Five Tompkins County men appointed to run Tompkins County Board 62 will meet this week to plan registering men aged 18 through 25 between August 30 and September 18. Use of courthouse facilities has been approved by the supervisors. The board includes Clarence F. Morse Ithaca D L Finlayson Cornell University professor LaMont C Snow Caro line Edwin Sweetland Dryden supervisor and Charles Scofield Lansing supervisor.
Cortland State Teachers College June graduates Miss Eleanore J. Minion and Miss Helen A. Johnston have accepted teaching posts for the coming school year. Miss Minion will teach health education at Mepham High School in Bellmore New York. Miss Johnston will teach physical education in Union Free School District 4 at Northport Long Island.
The Roy D Graves Post VFW will hold its annual clam bake Sunday at Coney Island Hannawa Falls. The program includes ball games swimming and other events.
Lowville announces the 1948-49 faculty roster led by vice principal G. Kenneth Kilpatrick. Names include Jeanette Allard Luther B. Askin Anna Boggs Frances Bowman Katherine Brown Anna Bune Mary Butts and many others with Elizabeth Gallup as secretary and Evangeline Schoff as cafeteria manager.
John Szabo an employee of the Borden Co. was sent off with a farewell party at Hotel Bennett in Cincinnati. Szabo, who arrived in 1935, has lived with Clyde Bliss for five years and will move to Czechoslovakia to join his family. Dawson Kerr and Clyde Bliss accompanied him to New York.
Auburn beat Watertown 5 to 2 Saturday night at Falcon Park to claim the series three games to one.
A clambake fundraiser for Cayuga Home for Children equipment fund was held yesterday at Riverbend along the Owasco outlet, sponsored by Cayuga County Restaurant and Hotel Association.
Rex Brown's barn four miles south of Colton on Sand Hill Road burned during a severe electrical storm Saturday night. The hay mow, 40 tons of hay and $500 in lumber and tools were lost. Insurance coverage was about $1,000. Local volunteers fought the blaze but could not stop it. two nearby buildings were saved.
Jefferson County's annual fair begins at the fairgrounds for five days with 4-H judging starting tomorrow at 9 A.M. Flower classes follow at 1 30 P.M. Harness racing runs Wed Thu and Fri afternoons. Circle V rodeo tonight front of grandstand. Koechman's Hell Divers perform Wed and Thu nights. Judging continues in open class Thursday. Grange day Wednesday with at least 22 Granges. Friday features Youth and Pet Show Day and a livestock parade at 1 30 P.M. Saturday hosts midget automobile races. Border League games Fri and Sat nights.
Miss Elsie Bernice Stauber daughter of Albert F Stauber of McGraw married Basil A Wildman son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd J Wildman of McGraw in a candlelight ceremony at the Baptist Church. Rev George Fairbank officiated with maid of honor Esther Gilbert and bridesmaids Mary Hicks Irene Marion. Best man Karlton Phelps. reception for 125. They will live at 115 Homeray Cortland. Mrs Wildman nurses at Cortland County Hospital. Basil Wildman is Syracuse University student and former Army at 1943 1946.
AUBURN A. Philip Randolph president of the International Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters will be principal speaker at the Auburn Federation of Labor picnic at Emerson Park on Sunday. Randolph a Harvard graduate founder of his union Walter Beck arranged entertainment and games with prizes donated by Joseph Fiore for event winners.
Auburn County Treasurer Joseph G. Pollard and staff start assembling the delinquent tax list for Cayuga County townships for the annual tax sale in October.
A elm tree four feet in diameter fell one mile outside Canton, knocking down power lines with 2,800 volts and diverting traffic through a cornfield for about three hours. State Police at Canton guarded live wires while power and telephone companies and the Highway Department were notified.
Joseph Kirkey 3B and Ralph D. French were admitted to the 25 Year Club at Massena Works of the Aluminum Company of America. Kirkey, a Massena native, has worked in the electrical department of the fabricating division for 25 years. French, a Westville native, is a truckman in the metal storage department of the reduction division.
The Marathon Fire Department purchased a dual resuscitator costing $642.60 to aid two persons at once in cases of suffocation or asphyxiation. The equipment was funded by a community campaign that raised $794 from residents, with Mrs. Peter Welch collecting over $100. Doctors Frail Nevin and Fairchild approved the purchase, and the remaining funds financed a public address system for community use.
Mrs. Mary Sulivan Whiting of 11 Seymour Street wife of Clarence J. Whiting died Saturday at Auburn City Hospital after a three week illness. Born in Auburn she was a Holy Family Church communicant and Rosary Society member. Survived by husband a son John A. Whiting and brothers John Sullivan of Cleveland and Cornelius Sullivan of Plainfield New Jersey.
Two people were injured in a two car crash on Calcium road in front of the Crossroads Restaurant two miles from Watertown. Burton R. Storey and Webb Murdock drove the cars. Beatrice Storey received treatment at Mercy Hospital for facial and knee injuries and concussion. Murdock was taken for hip X rays.
Lawrence E. D Amour 55, barber and aluminum plant worker, died yesterday morning at Massena Memorial Hospital. Survived by wife Elizabeth G. D Amour two sons Lyle and James a daughter Adele a brother Arthur of Fort Covington and two sisters Mrs Edward Dawson of Winnipeg and Miss Annie D Amour of Montreal. Funeral Wednesday at 10 AM Secret Heart Church burial Fort Covington Cemetery.
Cornelius Crowley a Potsdam native about 50 who died in Hollywood Florida will have funeral services tomorrow at 9 AM in St Marys Church. Burial follows in St Marys Cemetery and the body arrived in Potsdam the previous day. He graduated from Clarkson College and after marriage lived in Carthage. He wrote short stories under a pen name and was seriously injured in an automobile accident about 12 years ago resulting in lifelong wheelchair confinement. He is survived by his wife and six sisters.
The Racquette Valley Fish and Game Club of Colton voted to sell about five acres west of South Colon along the Racket River for camp sites. The club has built a pistol range and two rifle ranges and plans a fish pond stocked with fish open to the public.
Tony Konkoski 36 of Liberty Avenue died yesterday at Ogdensburg Hospital after several weeks illness. Body taken to Phillips Memorial Home. Survived by his mother wife several children and several brothers and sisters.
Workmen expect to place the first stop and go traffic signal in Potsdam’s business district on Wednesday at Market and Elm, a key intersection of Routes 11 and 56.
Jockey Robert Nobby Jones of Belleville Ont. remains in Edward John Noble Hospital with a deep back injury after a crash at Gouverneur Fairgrounds. Linwood Miss, Jones's horse, died from the accident as Mark of War ran loose causing the derailment near the finish line. jockey Melvenna survived.
Watertown hosts the Kiwanis Club musical History in Swingtime on October 6 7 and 8 at South Junior High School. Proceeds support Kiwanis community service projects. Roy F. Hayes named general chairman.
LOWVILLE The Lewis County Fair begins today at Forest Park with exhibitors finishing setup and granges finalizing displays. A ball game between Lowville and Beaver Falls kicks off the week, followed by daily ball games and harness racing for four days as the fair runs through Saturday night.
Mr and Mrs Ernst Graedel of Berne Switzerland announce the engagement of their daughter Trudy Martha Graedel to Warren E Hewitt son of Mrs William E Hewitt of 173 Park Ave Watertown. Miss Graedel studied languages in Solothurn and Geneva and at Columbia University. Hewitt, a Watertown High School and Ursinus College alumnus, served in the Army with the 101st Airborne in Europe and is now a Columbia Law School student.
Lowville alumni of Free Academy convened for organizing efforts with the class of 1945 presiding. A picnic meeting is planned for August 22 at 5 30 P M on school grounds to discuss a permanent alumni association with committees handling program food and publicity.
