Pentagon plans $100 billion effort to double sustainment capacity

The Defense Department launches a five year program to extend combat endurance, aiming to double and later triple ammunition and supply resilience. Officials say current rates would exhaust materiel in about 30 days without additional ships and aircraft. Experts warn goals may be unrealistic due to rising consumption and political limits on spending. Military leaders note historical consumption: World War I 65 tons daily rising to 1,000 tons in Vietnam with Israel at 2,000 tons in 1973. About half of needs would support mobile forces.
