Rome reports Axis air forces bombed a British naval formation off Tobruk in the Mediterranean and torpedoed a destroyer. Italian aircraft also attacked the British base at Famagusta and machine gunned British aircraft at Halifa, Malta, as part of the Eastern Mediterranean assault.
Bad weather over the continent interrupted the Royal Air Force offensive during the night. German raids on Britain were on a slight scale with little damage and no casualties reported from bombs near the east coast. A bomber was claimed shot down off the east coast shortly before dark, and another was reported shot down by British fighters off the northeast coast today.
German warplanes damaged a 3,000 ton freighter off Cromer and another merchantman off Great Yarmouth during the night. Authorized sources said raids also struck military targets on the east coast and a German reconnaissance plane shot down a Sunderland flying boat over the Faeroe Islands.
Clifford L. Lord of New York, a Columbia University history instructor, was appointed executive director of the State Historical Association. The announcement came from association president Dr. Dixon Ryan Fox.
A dentist office robber entered after a knock on the door, bound and gagged technician Henry Pettit with towels, stole $15 from a cash drawer, then fled. The incident followed other unrelated weather and street anecdotes from various cities.
Gov. Gonzalo Bautista announced the United States released aluminum from defense reserves to finish Puebla's new astronomical observatory. A shipment is expected to arrive within a few days.

New York date Aug 22 Max Lowenhardt must pay his wife 10 weekly support for their 13 year old daughter while alimony of 35 weekly is sought. He testified to an aversion to cats and a quarrel over the pets and his wife allegedly threatened him. Justice Frank Johnson ordered the child support.
Bangkok declares Thailand will resist any attack with stubborn resolve. Luang Vichi ttar Vadakarn, minister of state, affirms neutrality and courage saying to die as free men is better than to live as slaves. Radio urges air raid shelter preparedness amid warnings of possible attacks from Indo China.
In Buenos Aires on August 22 Judge Ramon Vasquez ordered the arrest of 36 people including German nationals and Nazi sympathizers. The arrests followed lengthy conferences with Demonte Taborda, head of a special Congressional committee. One man accused the authorities of operating illegal associations.
Hollywood August 22 The Universal Studios starlet Anne Nagel will delay her marriage to aviation instructor John Robertson of the Dutch East Indies Government. Robertson wired from Java that he cannot return for at least 17 months after resigning from the U S Navy. Nagel’s passport to Java was blocked by new Dutch regulations restricting American women from traveling to the East Indies.
