COLORADO SPRINGS Colo After a year of delay the Pentagon begins a billion dollar National Test Facility to simulate nuclear wars and test Reagan anti miss ile defenses with 2300 computer and military experts. The project aims to determine if a futuristic battle between missiles and defenses can be won by the United States using Star Wars style systems.
Two blasts rattle the Gulf near Fujaira and Furaira as a large explosion shakes a Saudi Aramco facility. Kuwaiti tankers, escorted by US warships, load oil for southbound runs while UAE declares the Fujaira area safe, despite a busy harbor with about 60 ships at anchor.
Wire service reports describe a Gulf Agency owned tanker encountering submerged mines. The vessel survived with remains of an oil slick and debris including wood metal and cigarette cartons floating on the surface. At least two more mines were found during the day.
About 800 residents and visitors gathered in Philmont for a parade and clambake honoring Oliver North, but around 100 protesters from New York and Massachusetts interrupted the event with a 26 minute series of statements opposing North and Reagan policies toward Nicaragua. Balloons carried messages urging peace and patriotism while village officials continued the tribute to North, who grew up in Philmont and attended Annapolis.
