Penny Clark, seven, daughter of singer Buddy Clark widow Nedra Clark, was struck by a car while crossing a street to join playmates. Nurse Ruth Shackelford called to her but Penny did not hear. Relman Morin reports from Tokyo that Red troops burst from the Naktong defense line near Changnyong, overrunning sections of the U.S. 24th Infantry. Fighting was heavy and indecisive with Red tanks and armored cars pressing toward Taegu as U.S. and Korean units, including front line adjustments, struggle to hold the river line. Taegu remains Korea's emergency capital with 60,000 Reds massed in the Waegwan sector.
The White House announced President Truman will nominate New York City Mayor William O Dwyer as ambassador to Mexico. The nomination will be sent to the Senate around Sept 1 and O Dwyer will resign as mayor about that time prompting a mayoral election campaign in New York this fall.
Tokyo reports Kim Il Sung commanded North Korean troops to win the war by the end of August as the first anniversary of Korea’s liberation is celebrated. He set a Sept 1 deadline for conquests in the south and warned South Korean and American forces to be driven from Korea.
