State raises late tax charges to curb postponement
New York State increases interest on late payments for personal, business, sales and gift taxes to 14 percent and for corporate and withholding taxes to 17 percent. Late refunds will incur 14 percent interest. The aim is to reduce the incentive to borrow from the state by delaying payment and to boost compliance amid shifting economic indicators. In 1979 late payments brought in about $60 million, rising to $70 million in 1980, with expectations of about $90 million in 1981.
