Philadelphia AP report: Raymond Macatee, a 32 year old trolley motorman, tends to 14 month old girl triplets while wife Elizabeth, 31, has twins, both girls, born Saturday at Lankenau Hospital. The mother says they hope they do not go crazy and the father comments on the mixed feelings. continuation on page I.
Washington report on Benjamin F. Fields ex-convict and broker who says he profited by buying government surplus war materials below market and reselling to private buyers. He details fees, splits of price differences, and contacts with the War Assets Administration. Concluded on page 12 column 4.
Price Ltd and American Farm Bureau Federation witnesses testified that any attempt to reinstate price controls on meat, butter, and major farm products would cause confusion in markets. They warned grains livestock dairy and other products should not be decontrolled, and noted that Congress allowed lapse post OPA revival with August 21 looming unless the new board acts. The U S Weather Bureau warns of mostly cloudy skies for today and tonight in the Syracuse area with a warmer trend. Expected high around 74 degrees and low near 58, sunset 8 12 PM and sunrise 6 08 AM Tuesday. A record high of 96 was in 1930 and humidity at 10 AM today was 70 percent.
The baby cold wave is easing and summer heat returns, with temperatures rising gradually Tuesday and Wednesday. Tonight brings a cold bite again while Sunday’s readings averaged 16.6 degrees, two below normal, and a 57 degree low by 6 AM today. The Weather Bureau notes Great Lakes areas run about 10 degrees warmer than Syracuse.
Public relations headquarters of the Eighth Division at Gorizia announced today that an American soldier was fired upon Sunday on the Trieste Gorizia road near the same point where another American soldier was ambushed and killed recently.
Providence dispatch reports Naval Commander de Soph Wayne Ram you, a 71 year old native of Terre Haute Indiana, died after being hurled through a 40 escape hatch of a twin engine trainer. He fell 6000 feet into the sea on Sunday during an accident aboard the plane.
Secretary Byrnes presides as chair of the Paris peace conference and faces a Soviet challenge to rulings on procedure. Vishinsky demands immediate debate on Italy terms and Yugoslavia’s right to speak, while Britain’s Alexander comments during the session.
CHICAGO INS. An inquest into the murders of six year old Saxsone Degnan and ex-Wave Frances Brown is scheduled today despite William Heirens, 17, confessing to both crimes. Sheriff Michael Mulcahy said he would bring Heirens from county jail to the inquest, though defense counsel says he will not testify.
Two tired bank bandits fleeing with nearly 33000 after raiding Walters First National Bank were pinned down in the Kiamichi Mountains near Atoka Oklahoma as more than 100 officers scoured the area. Bloodhounds from McAlester pursued the fugitives who fled with no food or water, but the strong terrain kept them elusive for four days.
Two more refugee ships carrying Jewish migrants anchored near Halfa Harbor adding pressure to the Palestine crisis as reports speak of a British blockade. The arrival brings estimated 3,900 refugees at Haifa or en route who may be denied land without immigration certificates, sparking fears of bloodshed and hints of direct action to land them. Jewish circles say Britain plans to load newcomers onto two troop transports standing by in the guarded harbor and move them away.
Paris report notes about 20 million Wehrmacht troops captured by the Red Army and many others from Axis allies including Poles Czechs Luxembourgers Austrians and Lorraine Alsace youths. Kane County Sheriff George F. Powell waited a week for a military policeman to return a private first class from Aurora to Fort Sheridan for trial on AWOL charges. The sheriff contacted Fort Sheridan to learn why the MP had not appeared. the MP was AWOL as well.
London reports Russia asked Turkey to revise the Montreux Convention granting Ankara broad control over the Dardanelles. The Foreign Office said it had received a copy of the Soviet note to Turkey requesting the change.
A series of tremors rocked the Caribbean coastal area for eight days. The latest quake at 4:31 AM caused no reported damage as aftershocks continued to lessen in frequency and strength over the last 48 hours in the Dominican Republic.

The U S Army says a New York family ran a multi nation black market ring with members in Berlin Paris New York and Shanghai. Two brothers were arrested in Berlin and Paris while the father David Warner heads the operation from 253 West 72nd Street New York. Officials seized letters showing the plan and say Warner and kin dealt in numerous contraband goods. Police note the family includes Lewis Robert Oscar Selig Warner and AL Warner among others and investigations continue.
Senator Robert M. LaFollette Jr. fights a heated Wisconsin Republican primary Tuesday against Circuit Judge Joseph R. McCarthy and Perry J. Stearns. McCarthy carries the party organization endorsement as observers mark the contest as nationally significant amid other races across Vermont South Carolina and a GOP state contest.
