Weather outlook with mixed skies this weekend

Local women set world relay record at Syracuse event

One hundred women from the Syracuse Chargers runners club formed a mammoth relay team on Wednesday. They rotated running a male baton to eclipse a 1977 record during an all-day event from 11 am to 9 33 pm at Basketball USA's Dream Team II races, finishing 5-0 in the meet.

Penn Can Mall to be replaced by strip shopping center

Wilmorite Inc plans to demolish Penn Can Mall in Cicero to build a $10 million open strip shopping center expected to attract large tenants within a year. Regal Cinemas will operate a 12 screen theater, joining other anchors as Wilmorite lures retailers amid competition from Carousel Center and Great Northern Mall.

Blast victim's girlfriend recalls young man who loved life

Nicoletti campaign debt burdens Syracuse Democrats

World AIDS condom demand eyed at 20 billion

The World Health Organization estimates 20 billion condoms will be needed over the next decade to curb AIDS. At Yokohama, officials noted 525 million condoms were used last year to prevent AIDS and other STDs, while the United States sells about 562 million annually. Demand will rise as efforts promote usage, especially in Asia and Africa.

Goma residents protest soldiers profiting from crisis

Thousands of Zamans demonstrated in downtown Goma accusing soldiers aiding the Rwandan refugee crisis of theft and extortion. They cited relief supplies taken from aid planes unloading daily and the tense situation after 1 million refugees arrived in mid July.
