UN Security Council members except Russia debated options to compel Malik to observe chair rules after a walkout halted a session over seating the South Korean representative. Western delegates proposed suspending the chair or boycotting meetings, with a special General Assembly session likely.
A UPA military air transport plane landed safely in Dartmouth Nova Scotia after reporting distress 120 miles south of the coast. No injuries were reported and the crew is accounted for.
Marquis Childs argues in the editorial page that optimistic comparisons of American and Russian production could lull the public into complacency. The note appears among pages 40 and 41 with other features listed.

A thief snatched a woman’s purse on Madison Street near University Avenue and fled. Police, including Patrolman Joseph O Neill and Sergeant William McCarthy, searched the area and spotted the youth near a porch on University Avenue. McCarthy fired two shots in the air before the suspect surrendered, leading officers to a porch where the stolen six dollars were found in the wallet.
The Polish motorship Batory encountered a mystery aerial passenger after three days in port. A seaplane he rented near Hackensack, New Jersey, drifted ashore about 100 miles from the ship. The flyer identified as Guillermo San Sebastian, a Mexico City tourist, sparked questions about the plane’s owner and origin.
An emergency board report on a rail conductors dispute was filed by the President. The board found in June the carriers accepted the report while the unions rejected it, with the conflict centering on a 40 hour week pay increases and changes to operating rules.
The Danish government votes to resign after an all night session on the economy. New elections were scheduled for September 2. Ministers debated a proposal to stabilize the economy and finance a defense plan.
In upstate New York, trainees at Fort Knox are to be assigned to armored forces after completing training at Fort Niagara during World War I. Sheriff reports a group of safecrackers smashed into a Brewerton Brewerton station on Kirsch roads and stole 302 dollars from three cloth bags. A .25 caliber pistol was taken. the battered safe was found near Hickok and Burnet. Investigating deputies named John Kissock as station operator and Irving Stetson as taxi driver who found the safe in the road.
Washington report says House Armed Services Committee advised Defense to not call reservists with big families to duty and to draft a substitute plan based on quarters allowances. The panel, in a closed session with Defense experts, also junked a multi million dollar program for servicemen's dependents.

A Finnish freighter named Sirius was barred from entering Philadelphia port as a suspected Trojan horse risk. Customs officials said the ship had not been inspected here because it had been searched thoroughly in Boston before arriving to unload cargo.
Brooklyn tenants told a court that a man known as Chief Reindeer managed their elevator since July 3, threatening residents with a scalping knife and a war club if they complained. The owner promised a self service elevator to end the disturbances.
The House and Senate dispute over wartime powers to impose wage and price ceilings and rationing. Senate aims to keep standby powers in effect until June 30, 1952, while the House bill would end them a year earlier. Both would authorize the President to allocate scarce materials and extend defense production loans.
The United States will spend about 10 percent of the multi billion dollar annual budget in Canada. Under current estimates this would give Canada $1,000,000,000 a year in American war materiel contracts. A joint U S Canada mobilization committee met in Ottawa to plan joint industrial mobilization of both economies for war purposes.
Task Force 8 6 arrives in New York Harbor enabling officers and men to take shore leave. Among the personnel are 1329 midshipmen and 536 cadets from West Point, q u e s i n g the midshipmen while aboard.
A horse dragged a rider named Evio Pinga a short distance in Monterey California yesterday after becoming unseated. He was reportedly thrown from the horse and suffered injuries.
Reports from Tokyo credit aggressive U S and South Korean troops with breaking Communist resistance along the Naktong front. Refugee accounts claim South Koreans have driven Reds from most positions as fronts show retreat for the first time in the Korean War.
