County's high property tax questioned by local leaders

Onondaga County collects 141 million from property taxes this year for 450000 residents, about 313.4 per person. Legislator Donald Colon calls the tax high while chamber president Erwin Schultz notes costs like state income tax and worker's comp affect comparisons. He warns apples to apples fail due to varied county services such as libraries, zoos, and health programs. City & State analyst Amy Lamphere says service levels vary by state and county. The survey ignores sales taxes and other fees, and critics urge considering subsidies like the Van Duyn Home and Hospital and nursing-home closures elsewhere. county spokesperson Martin Farrell cites these points under Pirro.
