Nearly all of Auburn Correctional Facility's 4,572 inmates reportedly joined a peaceful strike to back a proposed measure allowing early release for good behavior. About 15 supporters picketed outside as kitchen staff joined strikers, with officials uncertain how long the action would last.
In New York a dynamite device was defused today inside a three story building at 1270 Sixth Avenue, part of threats tied to last week's explosions that killed one and injured seven. Police evacuated the area after a security guard found a suspicious suitcase at 10 20 a m. The FALN Puerto Rican group claimed responsibility for the Mobil Oil and Defense Department offices blasts. Police sealed Sixth Avenue as bomb disposal units retrieved the defused sticks.
Francis Gary Powers who spent 21 months in a Soviet prison after the 1960 U-2 incident was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in a brief Air Force ceremony. His widow Claudia and children Gary and Dee watched as taps sounded and the honor guard fired three volleys.
