City police report 2,595 burglaries investigated by July 31, up from 1,940 in the previous year, a 33.7 percent increase. Officials cite drugs unemployment and idle teens as factors behind the spike.
Baldwinsville officials consider arming the police with portable sound meters to enforce a local ordinance that would make loud talking illegal, with up to 15 days in jail and fines up to 100 dollars. Exemptions include church bells and Oktoberfest but not outdoor rock concerts. Local tavern owner Ralph George opposed the measure after a June rock concert drew about 500 attendees.
